Delegations from Canada and Australia
visit LVPEI
Collaboration has always been a feature of research at LVPEI; with the nature of our research becoming more interdisciplinary, our focus on addressing complex problems of causation and treatment of disease, the range and potential of international collaborations has expanded. Following the acceptance of a bilateral Indo-Canada proposal that called for industry-academy collaboration on either side, a Canadian delegation that included the High Commissioner designate, Mr Joseph Caron and the Canadian Deputy Minister of International Trade, Ms Marie Lucie Morin, visited LVPEI on September 9, 2008, and met with scientists from the stem cell group and others. The collaborative project envisaged under this program is of a highly innovative nature, and aims to create a product or process with a clear commercial outcome in the area of stem cells and regenerative medicine.
This was followed by the visit of a government delegation from Australia, which included the new Australian Foreign Minister, Mr Stephen Smith, the Australian High Commissioner in New Delhi, Mr John McCarthy, and other senior advisers and officers. Mr Smith, who was visiting India for the first time in an official capacity, was interested in looking at key areas of Indo-Australian collaboration, particularly in areas of healthcare, science and technology. The Minister's visit was particularly significant in the wake of the Australian government's announcement of a AUD 45 million package for the development of eye care in the Western Pacific, an initiative that would be utilizing the LVPEI model of eye care delivery as a key feature.
